Secondary industries are those that take the raw
materials produced
by the primary sector and process them to produce manufactured products.
We can talk of different types of products: intermediate products and consumer products.
Intermediate products are products that might require
further processing before it is saleable to the ultimate consumer, or with
other words, these are products that are used to make other products. This
further processing might be done by the producer or by another processor. An
example could be timber and steel because they are used to produce the final
product that can be a house or a building.
Consumer products are products that can
be bought by consumers for personal use. An example is the automotive industry
that transforms the intermediate products like the steel into consumer products
like cars.
The secondary-sector industries in
Spain are mainly located along the coast of País Vasco and in Cataluña. In the past they were important industries: the metal industry, the construction industry and the
shipbuilding. In the last year other industries are rising like food, motor,
chemical, and technological industries, which produce electronic products and
computer components.
